Quick Question: What would it look like if it was fun?

Quick Question

Here is today's quick question for you...What would it look like if it was fun?

Ask it when you're...

  1. Procrastinating - You’ve done the dishes, the laundry and tidied the house, now you can’t put off the work task any longer. Try seeing some small part of it as fun - make it a game, do something creative or challenge yourself to see how fast you can complete it.

  2. Your team is dreading a project  - It’s an important project with a critical deadline. It’s got to be done -  but your team is dreading it. Ask them to reimagine it with their ‘funglasses’ on.

  3. Attending an event you’d prefer to avoid - We’ve all been there. When asked 3 weeks ago, I said I’d attend. Now it’s 5 pm on the day. I’m shattered and really can't be bothered leaving the house. But, maybe it will be really fun.

Listen for...

Sometimes it’s a little too easy to talk ourselves into how difficult or boring something might be.

Try to listen for:

  • The Fun Police -  the voice that tells us everything we won't like about it.

  • Connection to Passion and Purpose - ways to encourage the team to link the dreaded project with the impact they want to have on customers or the community

  • A Hint of Possibility - a sense that new ideas and connections could create something special and unexpected

This question helps reframe our thinking and inject new enthusiasm into our work.

Follow up with...

Sometimes, the greatest value comes from the one extra question you take the time to ask.

In this situation, you could try…

  • How will I feel when it’s done?

  • What will completing this enable us to do?

  • How would I feel if I didn't show up when I said I would?
